Cultural Preservation

UIU SEEKS TO BE A SOLUTION IN THE DIASPORA BY CREATING PROGRAMMING THAT FOCUSES ON THE PRESERVATION OF THE IGBO LANGUAGE AND CULTURE.

Umu Igbo Unite means children of Igboland unite. The Igbo people are one of the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria with approximately 32 million people. While we seek opportunities in a foreign land, younger generations are often lured away from their communities by educational or employment opportunities.

Once this occurs, due to the language being an essential feature of culture and identity, the youth often lose a sense of personal history and belonging. The lack of a common language creates many challenges for the elders of the community to teach the youth their people’s history, ancestral beliefs, values, systems, foods, animals, the history of their land, traditional medicines or kinship concepts. With studies showing that the Igbo language will become extinct within 50 years and being listed as an endangered language, we are dedicated to fostering the preservation of our culture by various means technology and community afford us. For us at UIU, it is important to preserve our cultural heritage, because it keeps our integrity as a people.

Connecting The Diaspora

Umu Igbo Unite IS BUILDING A COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE THAT IDENTIFY WITH THEIR IGBO HERITAGE.

We aspire to be a bridge between the continent and the diaspora, serving a source of knowledge for Igbo culture, language and community. We believe and are committed to bridging the gap of culture and identity through networking. As we advance through life, establishing identity and relationships in society becomes more important. Our goal is to build stories that create common experiences that shape cultural identities and link our futures. The most enterprising Igbos have been drivers of advancements in media, academia, literature and more. This is just a reflection of the depth and greatness of who we are as a people.

The ability to thrive wherever we are planted, whether, in Canada, the United States, or the United Kingdom, Igbo communities have forged ahead with unimaginable resilience and excellence. We seek to continuously promote this intrinsic truth and to bridge ethnic differences within the homeland. Similarly, UIU promotes cultural exchange with our host society in order to highlight common interest and identity.

Community Development and Entrepreneurship.

UPHOLDING THE ADVANCEMENT OF IGBO PEOPLE IN THE DIASPORA, NIGERIA, & AFRICA.

UIU aspires to utilize the rich social capital of Igbos in the diaspora to build a network of individuals with a passion to see the transformation in their communities. Whether it’s in the diaspora or on the continent, UIU wants to create a platform for Igbos to make their ideas work. Umu Igbo Unite recognizes that a strong Igbo community benefits the black community and also benefits Nigeria.

The best way to pursue Igbo preservation is to share it with others. We invite you to join this noble pursuit while we march onwards to the future founded and shaped in the true essence of the Igbo nation while remaining internationally relevant..
